Apparently we have found the secret to Rory McIlroy becoming the greatest golfer ever. Do not date for the next 20 years. A vow of chastity until age 45 and the world is yours, Rors.

Since Rory McIlroy called off his wedding to tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki, he's been a tour de force on the course. He broke off the engagement in late May, and less than three months later he is 36 holes away from a third consecutive tour victory and second consecutive major victory. He's the leader of this PGA Championship by one shot heading into Saturday, and McIlroy has become a Tigeresque front-runner.

So is it that simple? Is hitting the little white ball that much easier without the ol' ball and chain? Was he spending more time selecting china patterns and bed sheets than hitting the range? The bachelor was asked Friday whether there is a correlation between his recent lights-out play and his recent single status. "I think it has happened to me for the better," McIlroy said. "I've put a little bit more time into my golf and it's refocused me in a way. … I guess, what else do I have to do? I get up in the morning, I go to the golf course, I go to the gym. It's just my life at the minute, you know. It obviously works pretty well, so I'm going to keep doing it. I've just really buried myself in my golf game." Burying the competition has been the byproduct. McIlroy fired an opening-round 66 here to sit one shot off the lead heading into Friday, then backed it up with a 67 in what was the most challenging playing conditions of the day.

An early-morning deluge left Valhalla Golf Club soaked for McIlroy's 8:35 a.m. tee time, which ultimately was pushed back to 9:25. McIlroy and playing partners Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer began their round in steady rain, and it continued to drizzle most of their time on the course.

Watson looked and sounded like a petulant diva the entire round, whining to caddy/whipping boy/candidate for sainthood Ted Scott. Hopelessly burdened by being the only golfer in history to have to play in the rain, Watson splashed his way to a surly 72 and declined to speak to the media afterward. McIlroy ignored Bubba's tantrum and serenely stuck to his game. "Look, hey, I've complained after a lot of shots before and everyone out here moans about something," McIlroy said. "It's just part of it. I don't really pay any attention to my playing partners that much anyway. I could see how some people could maybe be affected by it. … I've been guilty of it before and a lot of other players on tour have done the same thing. But it didn't affect me."

McIlroy was 1-over through his first three soggy holes, but then recorded two birdies and an eagle on the next six to take the lead. The question now is whether he'll ever relinquish it.

Rory's ears stick out at an almost elfin fashion beneath his flat-brim Nike hat, but the man has been a cold-blooded crusher when possessing a lead in the last couple of years. He wired the field at Hoylake last month to win the British Open, and in his previous major victories (the 2011 U.S. Open and 2012 PGA) he was unchallenged in the final round. He won both of those two events by eight shots.

There was a time when McIlroy was a tentative leader, and he learned painfully from it. That was the final round of the 2011 Masters, when he had the lead and a chance to win his first major and instead shot a ghastly 80. "I wasn't quite comfortable in that position [at that Masters]," McIlroy said. "It's taken me a couple of years to grow into that where I am comfortable, and my mindset has stayed the same since that day at Augusta. If I'm two ahead I'm going to try to get three ahead, and if I'm three ahead I'm going to try to get four ahead, and if I'm four ahead I'm going to try to get five ahead. I'm just going to try and keep the pedal down and get as far ahead as possible."

Seeing how low McIlroy can go this weekend could provide an element of suspense. Or maybe this one won't be a walkover. He has some talented pursuers capable of keeping it competitive, and Valhalla has a history of drama. It took a playoff to decide its two previous PGA champions.

If I were Lee Westwood, Jim Furyk, Jason Day or Rickie Fowler, I'd try to set up McIlroy with a whirlwind romance this weekend. If he's getting lucky in Kentucky, it might give them a chance to win. If not, this tournament may already be over.
England were sent tumbling out of the World Cup for the first time since 1958 after Costa Rica beat Italy 1-0.

Hodgson’s side needed Italy to take maximum points from the match to have any hope of survival. The result means Tuesday’s match against Costa Rica, who have now qualified for the knock-out stages, is meaningless for England.

Hodgson said he had no intention of resigning after the 2-1 defeat to Uruguay on Thursday in which Luis Suárez scored both goals on his first appearance since undergoing knee surgery a month ago. And he was backed by FA chairman Greg Dyke who said the 66-year-old would be remaining in his post until after the 2016 European Championships. “We’re supportive of Roy Hodgson, we’ve asked him to stay as manager,” Dyke said. “We do not see any value in changing. We think Roy has done a good job and it is an approach over four years and we hope to do better in the European Championships.”

It is the first time in 56 years England have fallen at this stage of the finals, with that World Cup squad the only one younger than the current crop. The other group-stage exit came in 1950 – the previous time the tournament was held in Brazil – and, while they approached the tournament more in hope than expectation, their early exit rankles.

The general consensus heading into the tournament was that it could not be any worse than the under-achievement in South Africa four years ago. However, defeats to Italy and Uruguay coupled with surprise package Costa Rica means it has been just that, with the inquest that follows unlikely to make pretty reading for the Football Association or Hodgson.

As well as Dyke, Hodgson retains the full support of FA board members Sir Trevor Brooking, Alex Horne and Adrian Bevington, who installed him as Fabio Capello’s successor two years ago. They have seen enough promise in Brazil to believe that Hodgson is the right man to take England through to Euro 2016, which is being held in France. “Everybody thought we played really well in the first game and narrowly lost,” Dyke said when asked why England had lost both their opening World Cup games for the first time in history. “In the second game it could have gone either way. We were not humiliated or anything like that. They were narrow defeats, but it is for the football people, not for me to identify why we did not win.”

Ever since he took on the job of FA chairman, Dyke has targeted victory at the 2022 World Cup.

The Premier League is an English professional league for men's association football clubs. At the top of the English football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Football League. Besides English clubs, some of the Welsh clubs can also qualify to play, and participation by some Scottish or Irish clubs has also been mooted.

The Premier League is a corporation in which the 20 member clubs act as shareholders. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing 38 matches each, totalling 380 matches in the season. Most games are played in the afternoons of Saturdays and Sundays, the other games during weekday evenings. It is currently sponsored by Barclays Bank and thus officially known as the Barclays Premier League. Outside England, it is commonly referred to as the English Premier League (EPL).

The competition formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from the Football League, which was originally founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal. This deal is worth £1 billion a year as of 2013–14, with BSkyB and BT Group securing the rights to broadcast 116 and 38 games respectively. The Premier League is the most-watched football league in the world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people. In the 2010–11 season the average Premier League match attendance was 35,363, the second highest of any professional football league behind the German Bundesliga, and stadium occupancy was 92.2% capacity. The Premier League ranked second in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years.

Since 1888, a total of 23 clubs have been crowned champions of the English football system. Of the 46 clubs to have competed since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, five have won the title: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers. The current champions are Manchester City, who won the title in the 2013–14 season.

History

Despite significant European success during the 1970s and early 1980s, the late '80s had marked a low point for English football. Stadia were crumbling, supporters endured poor facilities, hooliganism was rife, and English clubs were banned from European competition for five years following the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985. The Football League First Division, which had been the top level of English football since 1888, was well behind leagues such as Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga in attendances and revenues, and several top English players had moved abroad.

However, by the turn of the 1990s the downward trend was starting to reverse; England had been successful in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, reaching the semi-finals. UEFA, European football's governing body, lifted the five-year ban on English clubs playing in European competitions in 1990 (resulting in Manchester United lifting the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1991) and the Taylor Report on stadium safety standards, which proposed expensive upgrades to create all-seater stadia in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, was published in January of that year.

Television money had also become much more important; the Football League received £6.3 million for a two-year agreement in 1986, but when that deal was renewed in 1988, the price rose to £44 million over four years. The 1988 negotiations were the first signs of a breakaway league; ten clubs threatened to leave and form a "super league", but were eventually persuaded to stay. As stadia improved and match attendance and revenues rose, the country's top teams again considered leaving the Football League in order to capitalise on the growing influx of money being pumped into the sport.

Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter and 10 feet (3.0 m) high mounted to a backboard at each end. Basketball is one of the world's most popular and widely viewed sports.

A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket during regular play. A field goal scores two points for the shooting team if a player is touching or closer to the basket than the three-point line, and three points (known commonly as a 3 pointer or three) if the player is behind the three-point line. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but additional time (overtime) may be issued when the game ends with a draw. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it while walking or running or throwing it to a team mate. It is a violation to move without dribbling the ball, to carry it, or to hold the ball with both hands then resume dribbling.

Violations are called "fouls". A personal foul is penalized, and a free throw is usually awarded to an offensive player if he is fouled while shooting the ball. A technical foul may also be issued when certain infractions occur, most commonly for unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of a player or coach. A technical foul gives the opposing team a free throw, and the opposing team also retains possession of the ball.

As well as many techniques for shooting, passing, dribbling and rebounding, basketball has specialized player positions and offensive and defensive structures (player positioning). Typically, the tallest members of a team will play "center", "power forward" or "small forward" positions, while shorter players or those who possess the best ball handling skills and speed play "point guard" or "shooting guard".

History
In early December 1891, Canadian Dr. James Naismith, a physical education professor and instructor at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School (YMCA) (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA), was trying to keep his gym class active on a rainy day. He sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, and balls had to be retrieved manually after each "basket" or point scored; this proved inefficient, however, so the bottom of the basket was removed, allowing the balls to be poked out with a long dowel each time.

Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. The first balls made specifically for basketball were brown, and it was only in the late 1950s that Tony Hinkle, searching for a ball that would be more visible to players and spectators alike, introduced the orange ball that is now in common use. Dribbling was not part of the original game except for the "bounce pass" to teammates. Passing the ball was the primary means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the asymmetric shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a major part of the game around the 1950s, as manufacturing improved the ball shape.

The peach baskets were used until 1906 when they were finally replaced by metal hoops with backboards. A further change was soon made, so the ball merely passed through. Whenever a person got the ball in the basket, his team would gain a point. Whichever team got the most points won the game. The baskets were originally nailed to the mezzanine balcony of the playing court, but this proved impractical when spectators on the balcony began to interfere with shots. The backboard was introduced to prevent this interference; it had the additional effect of allowing rebound shots. Naismith's handwritten diaries, discovered by his granddaughter in early 2006, indicate that he was nervous about the new game he had invented, which incorporated rules from a children's game called "Duck on a Rock", as many had failed before it. Naismith called the new game "Basket Ball". The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York on January 20, 1892 with nine players. The game ended at 1–0; the shot was made from 25 feet (7.6 m), on a court just half the size of a present-day Street ball or National Basketball Association (NBA) court. By 1897–1898 teams of five became standard.
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players on a field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. Each team takes it in turn to bat, attempting to score runs, while the other team fields. Each turn is known as an innings.

The bowler delivers the ball to the batsman who attempts to hit the ball with his bat far enough for him to run to the other end of the pitch and score a run. Each batsman continues batting until he is out. The batting team continues batting until ten batsmen are out, at which point the teams switch roles and the fielding team comes in to bat.

In professional cricket the length of a game ranges from 20 overs of six bowling deliveries per side to Test cricket played over five days. The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) with additional Standard Playing Conditions for Test matches and One Day Internationals.

Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, it had developed into the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19th century the first international matches were being held. The ICC, the game's governing body, has 10 full members. The game is most popular in Australasia, England, the Indian subcontinent, the West Indies and Southern Africa.
In so many ways, football is still America’s national pastime. A lot of American individuals and families still make their weekend itineraries around football games. That said, wouldn’t it be best to build your events around the best games?
Here are 5 biggest dates in the football calendar in the coming weeks and months.

1. The new International Series (September 29 and October 27 2014) - These are NFL regular season games to be played at the Wembley Stadium in London, UK. For travel any in the world contact Cheap Flight 4u. For the September 29 game, the Minnesota Vikings will face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While for the October 27 game, the Jacksonville Jaguars will face off against the San Francisco 49ers.

2. Thanksgiving Classic (November 28)- The Thanksgiving Classic is a series of games that commemorate Thanksgiving. This year, a triple-header will highlight the festivities. For the first game, the Green Bay Packers will visit the Detroit Lions. For the second game, the Oakland Raiders will visit the Dallas Cowboys. And for the third game, a rivalry game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens will take place.

3. The beginning of the NFL Playoffs (January 4, 2014)- This is the time of the year when all games become virtual do-or-die affairs. All the battles waged at this stage would determine who will get to the Super Bowl, the game that determines who wins all the marbles for the 2013-14 NFL season.

4. BCS National Championship Game (January 6, 2014)- This is the game that ultimately determines the best team for this college season. The most prestigious of all bowl games, it is considered as a fitting culmination to the college football season. The protagonists for this match to be held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena will be determined by the final BCS rankings at season’s end.

5. Super Bowl XLVIII (February 2, 2014)- This game will pit the AFC and NFC champions to determine who takes home the NFL championship. Scheduled to be held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (which doubles as the home field of the Jets and Giants), this game is expected to make history once again and turn football players into legends.
The Red Sox came right back and scored twice in the eighth inning to tie it again, 4-all. Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a single and Shane Victorino was hit by a pitch for the sixth time this postseason. Both runners moved up on Dustin Pedroia's groundout, and David Ortiz was intentionally walked.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny went to hard-throwing closer Trevor Rosenthal with the bases loaded, hoping for a five-out save from a rookie who has looked almost untouchable this October. But the Red Sox pushed two runs across. Daniel Nava drove in one with a short-hop grounder that was smothered by second baseman Kolten Wong, who had just entered on defense in a double-switch. Nice play by the rarely used rookie. Wong went to second for the forceout, but Nava beat the relay and Ellsbury scored to make it 4-3. Xander Bogaerts tied it when he chopped a single up the middle.

Boston Red Sox's Daniel Nava, left to right, Jacoby Ellsbury and Shane Victorino kneel in the outfie. Brandon Workman jammed Matt Holliday and retired the slugger on a routine fly with two on to end the bottom of the eighth. Still tied at 4, heading to the ninth.
Istanbul (AFP) - Serena Williams' verdict that she is "a bit disappointed" with her 2013 season indicates her urgency to overtake the 18 Grand Slam titles of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert and to get on with chasing Steffi Graf's Open era record of 22. Whether the 32-year-old still has time to achieve that may be suggested by her performances at the season-ending climax, the WTA Championships which starts on Tuesday. It was an extraordinarily critical self-judgement by Williams on a season in which she has won another two Grand Slam titles and taken her total to 17 -- perhaps caused by a fear that time is short.

More than that, Williams has lost only four matches, taken her career earnings past $50 million, and become the oldest woman to hold the world number one ranking. She claims not to be mindful of such records, but nevertheless volunteered that: "I’m excited about the possibilities." Retaining the title this week will be a great momentum builder for her off-season work -- increasingly important as Williams gets older -- just as it was, she says, when she regained the title at the 2012 WTA Championships.

Williams is probably a stronger favourite now than then, partly because of the absence of Maria Sharapova, who is rehabilitating her vulnerable shoulder. The player most capable of upsetting her is Victoria Azarenka who has no doubt over where the American stands in the history of the sport. "She can be the greatest of all time," Azarenka reckoned after losing to Williams in the longest US Open Women's Singles Final in 30 years last month. "Serena's still not done."

The Belarusian also suggested that the American now focuses more intensely, and raises her level more dangerously when it really matters. Judging from the Grand Slam wins in Paris and New York, that level is sometimes higher than ever. On the evidence of setbacks at Melbourne and Wimbledon it can also be variable. Williams has lost twice to Azarenka this year -- in Doha in February the day after having regained the number one ranking from her rival -- and in Cincinnati in August after leading for most of the match.

Azarenka, at her best, has a chance of repeating these successes, because she has a big game and the boldness to try to impose it. "Against her you have to take risks," Azarenka says, "because she will (do that), and she will do that really well." But Azarenka will need to recover from a disappointing build-up to the WTA Championships. The world number two lost in the second round in Tokyo, where she had been feeling unwell, and in the first round in Beijing, where she served 15 double faults.

The other six qualifiers in an eight-player field are Agnieszka Radwanska, the former Wimbledon finalist from Poland, Li Na, the Chinese pioneer who reached her third Grand Slam final in Melbourne this year and Petra Kvitova, the 2011 WTA Championships winner. The field is made up of Sara Errani, the Italian who also tops the world rankings in doubles, Jelena Jankovic, the former world number one from Serbia, and Angelique Kerber, the German who won her first title of the year immediately after becoming the last player to qualify.

London (AFP) - Manchester United's disappointing start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday as the champions were held to a 1-1 draw at home to high-flying Southampton.

United's teenage winger Adnan Januzaj celebrated his new five-year contract by creating the game's opening goal in the 26th minute with a superb through ball for Wayne Rooney.

The England striker's shot was blocked by Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc, but Robin van Persie was on hand to sweep the rebound home. Both Rooney and Van Persie hit the woodwork thereafter, but the hosts were prevented from recording consecutive victories for the first time in the league this season when a header by Southampton defender Dejan Lovren flicked into the net off team-mate Adam Lallana from an 89th-minute corner.

"We had the opportunities to go 2-0 up. They had been knocking on the door, but I thought we would see it out," said United manager David Moyes. "But if you don't defend a corner well enough, there's always a chance they will score." The draw left United in eighth place, eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal. Having seen Liverpool temporarily take claim of first place earlier in the day, Arsenal returned to the summit with a 4-1 win at home to Norwich City. Jack Wilshere scored his second goal in two games to give Arsenal an 18th-minute lead, volleying home from Olivier Giroud's flick following a dizzying exchange of passes involving Santi Cazorla.

Mesut Ozil scored his first league goal for the club with a header from a Giroud cross in the 58th minute and although Norwich midfielder Jonathan Howson replied for the visitors, Aaron Ramsey came off the bench to make sure of victory before Ozil added a fourth. "A few weeks ago we lost our first home game here (against Aston Villa) and it was a difficult time, but we responded well and since then we have been consistent," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. "I like the solidarity in the team. Of course we have quality, but it's how much we maintain that and sustain that that will decide our future."

Arsenal lead the standings by two points from Chelsea, who leapfrogged Liverpool into second place after coming from behind to win 4-1 at home to Cardiff City. Jordon Mutch gave the promoted side a shock 10th-minute lead by lifting the ball over goalkeeper Petr Cech after Chelsea defender David Luiz inexplicably allowed a pass from team-mate Ramires to run past him. Jose Mourinho's side equalised in the 33rd minute with an unusual goal that saw Eden Hazard sweep the ball home from close range after Samuel Eto'o had stolen possession from Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall as he bounced the ball. Eto'o completed the comeback in the 66th minute, and although Mourinho was sent to the stands for dissent, Oscar and Hazard both found the net in the closing stages. Cardiff manager Malky Mackay described referee Anthony Taylor's decision to allow Chelsea's opening goal to stand as "a horrendous error".

Manchester City stole into the top four, three points behind Arsenal, after winning 3-1 at West Ham United in the late game. Sergio Aguero struck either side of half-time at Upton Park and then teed up a delightful late goal for David Silva after Ricardo Vaz Te had replied for West Ham with an overhead bicycle kick. Liverpool twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at 10-man Newcastle United. Visiting captain Steven Gerrard claimed his 100th league goal from the penalty spot shortly before half-time, cancelling out Yohan Cabaye's long-range opener, after Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was sent off for a last-man foul on Luis Suarez. The 10-man hosts restored their lead through 22-year-old substitute Paul Dummett, only for Daniel Sturridge to head home a second Liverpool equaliser from Suarez's 72nd-minute cross. "It's never easy when you're playing against 10 men, but I thought some of our play was outstanding today. We had to show character twice, coming from behind," said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. Gus Poyet's tenure as manager of bottom club Sunderland began in lamentable fashion as his side crashed 4-0 at Swansea City.

All the goals came in the last 33 minutes, with Jonathan De Guzman, Wilfried Bony, from the penalty spot, and Chico Flores netting after recalled Sunderland full-back Phil Bardsley opened the floodgates by putting through his own goal. Steven Pienaar scored within seconds of coming on to earn Everton a 2-1 victory at home to Hull City, while West Bromwich Albion were held to a 0-0 draw at Stoke City.

JD Sports Fashion Plc (JD/) climbed for a seventh straight day after N+1 Singer raised its price target for the U.K. sportswear chain, citing management changes and potential for overseas growth. “New management teams have been appointed to address the issues in fashion and outdoor and we view international and multi channel development in the core business as key drivers of the investment case,” Mark Photiades, an analyst at N+1 Singer in London, wrote in a note. He retained a buy recommendation and raised the price target to 1,350 pence from 1,100 pence.
The stock climbed as much as 2.9 percent and was up 2.2 percent at 1,180 pence as of 2:50 p.m. The shares have risen 10 percent in seven trading days, taking the Bury, England-based company’s market value to 574 million pounds ($926 million).
JD Sports, which acquired the Millets and Blacks outdoor clothing and equipment brands last year, has more than 800 stores. In the company’s domestic market, retail sales including fuel increased 0.6 percent in September, the Office for National Statistics said today. In a survey of textile, clothing and footwear retailers, 136 said their monthly sales increased year-on-year, compared with 93 that said it fell.
Daniel Agger is hoping Liverpool can secure a return to European football after being impressed by the club's start to the season. Liverpool are currently being kept off top spot in the Premier League table by Arsenal on goals scored after winning five of their opening seven matches.

Brendan Rodgers' side are not playing in Europe this season and have not played in the UEFA Champions League since the 2009/10 campaign. However, Agger would welcome the chance to appear on the European stage again and feels this season's lack of continental action is proving to be a help. "We would like to play in Europe, that is the most attractive, particularly the Champions League," Agger told Danish paper Politiken. "But, of course, fewer matches lets us recover better and we get more focused on the [Premier League] matches and that might be an advantage. "We set a goal before every match and that is to win. It's almost impossible to win [every time], but we enter the pitch determined to win."

The Denmark International added: "We have been longing for a good start. We have got that now and we have to continue like that. There are still a lot of matches, but it looks positive. "If you have seen many matches in the Premier League, you notice that everyone can beat each other. "There is nothing that is certain and, as long as things are like that, we have got to gather points and see how far it will take us."

There was a time when the budding cricketers of Sri Lanka looked upto India for learning the nuances of the game but Former Captain Arjuna Ranatunga feels this can no longer happen due to the advent of Twenty20. "It's unfortunate that most youngsters only want to play the shorter version for financial gains. Let's be very clear that India won't have any more Sachin Tendulkar or a Sunil Gavaskar. You won't find the elegance of Tiger Pataudi," the World Cup winning Lankan captain told a select gathering after a seminar at the FICCI in New Delhi on Sunday. "It was a part of our learning process as youngsters to look upto Indian cricket. I don't think we can learn from India anymore," Ranatunga said when asked whether the rise of Twenty20 will lead to India playing lesser number of Test matches in the near future.

The 49-year-old, who played 93 Tests and 269 ODIs for his country, also seemed disappointed with the way Indian cricket board has functioned over the past few years. "I think that Board of Control Cricket India (BCCI) should come under the Right To Information (RTI) act as they are not answerable to anyone, not even to their union sports ministry. That's why they do whatever they want. In Sri Lanka, at least we have the right to criticise Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in parliament and get it corrected," Ranatunga stated. He is not against politicians entering sports administration but feels technical decisions should be taken by cricketers in the board. "Cricketing decisions should be limited to cricketers.

That's the reason I feel insecure as a cricketer when I find that a player of [Dilip] Vengsarkar's stature loses to a politician. (Vengsarkar had lost the MCA polls to Vilasrao Deshmukh). In Sri Lanka Cricket, most of the administrators are appointed with blessings of president." Ranatunga reiterated that he is yet to digest as to why the erstwhile Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara made four changes in the 2011 World Cup final against India in Mumbai which the island nation lost. "Four changes in a final. I was surprised sitting in a TV studio alongside Kapil [Dev]. I told the channel to cross-check if it's right. There were players who were outsiders as far as that squad is concerned. "I don't know what happened as only the Sri Lankan captain could tell us about those changes. I still believe we should have won that final."

Someone who doesn't mince words, Ranatunga was very vocal about how SLC is not ready to handle the transition phase once veterans Mahela Jayawardene and Sangakkara call time on their career. "When we [and Aravinda de Silva] were getting old, we introduced Sanath [Jayasuriya] as vice-captain. Also we had players like Marvan Atapattu, Russel Arnold with whom we persisted for a long time. "You need to give players a long rope and not discard them after one or two failures. That's how you build a team," the cocky former skipper recollected. As has been his philosophy regarding T20 cricket, Ranatunga is certainly not amused that Lasith Malinga decided to forego his Test career to prolong his future in limited overs and especially T20. "If I start speaking about Malinga, I don't know where it will end. I believe that when he first expressed his desire to retire from Tests and play only ODIs and T20, the captain should have spoken to him. "I believe there shouldn't be any 'exceptionally separate' cricketer in a group. In a team, all are equals.

During our time, Aravinda was a world class player. But he was never treated differently from others," he said. Ranatunga is also peeved that a lot of cricketers seek political interference to get their job done. "The moment you try to take any action against errant cricketers, he invariably goes to a politician and the person who is trying to set things in order is then removed. I am glad that new chairman of selectors Sanath Jayasuriya has a long-term vision. Hopefully, he would be able to deliver the goods." The portly cricketer feels that regulation of sports betting won't be of any help to cure the malaise of match-fixing or spot-fixing. "I don't agree that regulation of sports betting can change the scenario as there are no guarantees that you can keep away the unwanted elements from an organized sector."

His rise in a sense became tied up with, or almost emblematic of India's own rise to assertion on the world stage. when Sachin Tendulkar made his debut for India in 1979 at the age of 16, India was still a developing country, a poor country, one with lots of problems, a semi-closed economy that stilled called itself socialist ... Then India liberalized in 1991 with the end of the Cold War and a major change in financial calculations and political philosophy in the country, and that coincided with Sachin's rise. India rose, and Sachin rose.

Amusingly enough, our government nominated him to our upper house. There are half a dozen nominated seats for very famous and distinguished figures in the field of culture or academia, even cinema or the arts. Sachin was given one of those seats, even before he retired ...

Given the hold he has on the admiration and the allegiance of the Indian people, he could speak on any public issue with a moral authority that very few could rival. So I think if he wanted to use that position as a member of the upper house, as an Indian equivalent of a senator ... he could have a significant impact on public life.
On one side there are fans of Sachin Tendulkar refusing to admit that his prolonged slump is a problem. On the other hand there are his critics, zooming in on cricketers summoned from the recent past, hauling them way past their achievements, to the level of the absolute ideal, in order to compare and contrast with Tendulkar’s supposed shortcomings. Arunabha Sengupta delves into his conversations with veteran sports historian Mihir Bose to conclude that cricket in India is a mythological drama depicting the clashes of created gods.
If we don’t like a god, we must create another. In God we trust. The rest bring data. These words of wisdom are attributed to Professor W. Edward Deming, American statistician, author and consultant. Applying quality control techniques and sophisticated statistical methods, Deming was instrumental in rebuilding post World War II Japan into a leading producer of high quality innovative products and shaping the country into an economic powerhouse.

In a perverse way, the quote offers a curious explanation of the sound and fury that surrounds the Indian cricket world, especially the fan-frenzy that hems it in and sustains its commercial fumes.

As the ocean of opinions on Indian cricket are tossed around and violently churned in many turbulent discussion forums, the beliefs and convictions that rise up are often deep-rooted in personal perceptions. Data is most often a bothersome evil surprising too, since cricket has one of the richest trail of numbers found in any sport. The ideas and conjectures have all the reasons to be more robust, backed up by reason and logic, with aid of figures underlining the facts.

Yet, it is not so. Figures and objective evidence do not seem to fit into the equation. The perceptions are most often as detached from facts as possible. And we need to look at the Deming quote backwards to decipher a reason behind this phenomenon.

Indian fans do not follow cricketers they believe in the gods that they make out of them. Hence, data is an overhead and sometimes a menace for their fanatical convictions. There are plenty of beliefs littered around the cricket world that are considered gospel that fall miserably in the face of facts. We have covered several of them on Cricket Country earlier. From the ridiculous claims about Indian defeats when Sachin Tendulkar scores a century, to the best players against the fearsome West Indian pace bowlers, from the supposed fab-factor of the fab-four to the luck factor of MS Dhoni, there have been examples aplenty about the misconceptions that run amok. However, for the purpose of this article it will suffice to look at the latest burning question surrounding the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar.

When we shared some views on the topic, we as usual received plenty of reactions from all corners of the cyberspace. The points put forward by our article were simple enough. Yes, Tendulkar is going through a prolonged trough. Yes, the dip in form has lasted 21 Tests. Yes, there are growing reasons to suggest that he should call it a day.
Defender Micah Richards admitted it is 'back to the drawing board' for Manchester City after they were taught a lesson by Bayern Munich. Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben gave the reigning champions a 3-1 win in tonight's Group D clash, despite Alvaro Negredo's fine consolation goal and Jerome Boateng's dismissal.
And Richards told Sky Sports 2: 'We knew they're a really good team and they showed that tonight, that's why they're champions. 'I thought Ribery and Robben were excellent. They didn't play with a striker as such and the movement in midfield was where the game was won.' City's defending was poor at times, with left-back Gael Clichy glaringly culpable for Muller's goal and keeper Joe Hart twice beaten at his near post. Richards added: 'We tried. We've had a lot of games and there were a few tired legs tonight but we're a lot better than that. 'It's back to the drawing board now.'

Robben revelled in his side's dominant performance and said: 'It was very good, the first 70 or 80 minutes in particular we played terrific football. 'To be so dominant against such a big team, we didn't expect an easy game like that. I think it's also a big compliment to our team but I expected a bit more from City. 'We didn't give them any space, we pressed them and they had a lot of balls they kicked away and we could start again. They sometimes gave us a little too much space and we are a team who can use the space very well.'
It was Bayern's second successive win to start their title defence, while they also have six wins and a draw from seven Bundesliga games.

Robben said: 'We have to stay with both feet on the ground, it's only the beginning of the season but we can be happy with tonight's performance. 'You have to enjoy it, when you've played such football it's really nice.'

Romelu Lukaku's first-half brace on his home debut helped Everton go fourth in the Premier League with a 3-2 victory over Newcastle at Goodison Park.

The Belgium international's performance was one, but not the only, reason why his new team displaced parent club Chelsea in the Champions League places as Everton made it six matches unbeaten - a league start not matched for seven years. Lukaku's fledgling partnership with Ross Barkley, playing behind in the hole, also resulted in Everton's other goal as the 19-year-old collected a lay-off from the Belgian to score his side's second after charging through the middle of an obliging Magpies defence. Substitute Yohan Cabaye, a surprise omission from the starting line-up, made Newcastle's only real impact with a brilliant 30-yard strike just after the interval. But even conceding their first goal in 11 hours 27 minutes could not knock Everton out of their stride and Loic Remy's 89th minute goal gave the scoreline a lop-sided look.

Everton's pace and passing was fast and crisp and Kevin Mirallas often, and right-back Seamus Coleman slightly less frequently, tore the left side of the visiting team to shreds. It was also not as if Newcastle had not had due warning about the threat of Lukaku. Ever since he arrived on deadline day he was talked about as being the Toffees' game-changer. Within two minutes he had opened up the visitors' defence but his cheeky backheel into the net was the clue he already knew the flag had gone up. Three minutes later there was no reprieve as Mirallas left Davide Santon trailing in his wake to cross low for Lukaku to stroke home despite Tim Krul's best efforts to keep out the shot. Lukaku and Barkley had a practice run for the second goal when the big striker laid the ball off for the attacking midfielder to fire first-time wide of the far post.

They perfected the move midway through the half when Sylvain Distin and Mirallas picked out Lukaku who fed Barkley through the middle and he charged past Fabricio Coloccini to clip past Krul for the academy graduate's first Goodison goal. Everton's third goal was pure route one as goalkeeper Tim Howard's punt downfield was seized upon by Lukaku, easily beating a statuesque Coloccini and rounding Krul before gleefully firing into the open net from close range. Lukaku found the net again but was denied by another offside flag before Newcastle finally registered their first shot, Howard easily saving low from Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman and Mapou Yanga-Mbiway were replaced at half-time by Cabaye and Mike Williamson respectively. Newcastle, who have won one of their last 11 league trips to Goodison Park and have taken just 16 points from their last 23 away games, pulled one back within six minutes thanks to Cabaye's blistering long-range strike. But there was to be no inspiring comeback like the 4-4 draw against Arsenal from an even worse position in 2011 and, even though Remy poked home from close range late on, it was little consolation.
Spain's Marc Marquez steers his Honda before winning the Aragon Moto GP grand prix at the Alcaniz circuit in Spain. Marc Marquez extended his points lead by winning the Aragon MotoGP on Sunday, but his victory came only after he played a part in the crash of Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa. Marquez grazed the back of Pedrosa’s bike when he was trying to pass him with 18 laps to go, causing Pedrosa to lose control and slide down the track with sparks flying.

I touched him a little with the front of my bike, and they tell me I may have broken a cable and that’s why he fell, said Marquez. It was very unlucky. That doesn’t usually happen.

The 20-year-old Marquez went on to overtake defending champion Jorge Lorenzo, who had jumped ahead with a great start on his Yamaha.

Marquez finished the race at the 5-kilometre (3.15-mile) MotorLand Aragon circuit in 42 minutes, 3.4 seconds. Lorenzo was 1.3 seconds behind.

We knew before the race that it was going to be tough, said Lorenzo. We had a lot of difficulties this weekend. The bike was unstable. But there are no excuses. Marc was faster and he deserved to win.

Valentino Rossi finished third, more than 12 seconds back on his Yamaha, ending a run of four straight fourth-place finishes.

Marquez’s sixth win of the season gave him one more than Lorenzo and broke his closest challenger’s run of winning the previous two races.

Marquez is aiming to become the first rookie to win the championship since American Kenny Roberts in 1978.

Marquez leads Lorenzo by 39 points with four races left. Pedrosa came in level on points with Lorenzo in second place but now trails Marquez by 59.

Pedrosa, who won here last year and turned 28 on Sunday, had to be carried off the track by the medical crew. He later said that he was fine except for some pain in his pelvis.

Pedrosa, however, was angry at both his teammate’s riding style and the race stewards’ decision not to penalize the incident and others like it.

It’s easy to sum up what happened. Marc always rides to the limit when he has riders in front, said Pedrosa. He hit me from behind and that’s where my race ended. It doesn’t matter what he says. I would also like to say something about the race stewards. There have been some things that have happened in recent years. We pilots with more experience have tried to calm down those with less, but (the stewards) have just let things go by as if nothing happened.
Tour de France winner Chris Froome says his best chance of winning Sunday's road race at the World Championships in Italy is to go for a solo victory. The 272km (169.2mile) race finishes with 10 16km circuits of Florence which take in a couple of climbs on each lap. Briton Froome, who is not known for his sprinting speed, knows he needs to distance his rivals before the finish. "If I am to win, I'm going to have to try and go clear on possibly the last couple of laps," he said. The 28-year-old is aiming to become the third British winner of the race - after Tommy Simpson and Mark Cavendish - and the first man to win the Tour de France and world title in the same year since America's Greg Lemond in 1989.

He will be helped by seven British team-mates, including Sir Bradley Wiggins, who won the silver medal in the time trial on Wednesday, 2011 winner Cavendish and Olympic track champion Geraint Thomas. Thomas told BBC Sport he expects to be one of the key helpers early on in the race while Froome hopes Wiggins will be influential in the latter stages.

"I'm expecting Brad to be there in the last few laps in Sunday," Froome said. "He's definitely going to be one of the key guys towards the end of the race. It would definitely be great if he could help me towards the final stages." Tactics will play a huge part in a race which is expected to be one of the most open in recent years and Froome knows that winning a one-day race has an element of good fortune attached to it. "Given that it is a one-day race, it's quite a gamble - it is a bit of a long shot to go for the win there and anyone who wins will need a little bit of luck in their favour. "Even if it does come to a sprint, it's very much still about who's got legs. You can be explosive and fast but if you don't have the legs it's not going to help you any more."

The two hills on each circuit - the 4.3km ascent to Fiesole and the 600m climb of Via Salviati, which has an average gradient of 10% but has sections at 16% - are not particularly taxing in their own right but when tackled 10 times, are expected to split the peloton. Froome has said he will be "trying to make it the hardest race possible" in an effort to eliminate the pure sprinters and puncheurs - riders who can get over small climbs and sprint - such as Belgium's defending champion Philippe Gilbert.

The Italians are also planning on riding aggressively and their team coach Paolo Bettini said: "Rather than chase all day, we want to be chased. We won't hold back. "The circuit is fast - they'll do the Fiesole climb at 30kmh (18.1mph) and it'll be very hard when the racing is hard. There's very little time to recover or organise a chase because there are two climbs per lap." Bettini expects Giro d'Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali to be in with a chance of winning.

"He's unusual as a rider," said the two-time world champion. "He can win Grand Tours but can also blow one-day races apart and win. He can do something on Sunday." The intention to make it a climber's race could also play into the hands of Spanish trio Alberto Contador, Joaquim Rodriguez and Alejandro Valverde, Colombian duo Nairo Quintana and Rigoberto Uran and Irish pair Dan Martin and Nicolas Roche, who are all comfortable on ascents. However, as well as Gilbert, Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara and Slovakia's Peter Sagan could find the circuit to their liking. Gilbert has won numerous one-day classics, which have a similar terrain to the Worlds course, but he had endured a testing season in the rainbow jersey before finally recording his first win of 2013 by taking stage 12 of the Vuelta a Espana earlier this month.
Cancellara has been in excellent form throughout the year, winning the Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders one-day races in the spring, and the 32-year-old held his form through the summer before winning the time trial at the Vuelta and bronze in the world time trial earlier this week.

Sagan is regarded as one of the sport's brightest prospects and has proved throughout the year he can keep pace with the climbers and also has the ability to beat sprinters on the flat. The 23-year-old has won 21 races in 2013, including the one-day sprinters' classic Gent-Wevelgem, and he finished second to Cancellara at the Tour of Flanders.

Following the motto sports for a better world it was not only about winning, but as well about having fun and sharing the enthusiasm for sports. The evening events like the Opening Ceremony and the Players Party were highlights for everyone and allowed participants to meet other nations and make friends for live.
ISLAMABAD - PSB-backed Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) president Major Gen (retd) M Akram Sahi has said that Pakistan team will participate in 15 different disciplines of the South Asian Junior Athletics Championship to be held in India.
Talking to The Nation on Friday, Gen Sahi said: “The camp of the junior players is currently underway at Jinnah Stadium, in which 25 players both male and female are getting training from highly-qualified coaches.” “We will try to invite more players for open trials before final selection of the team for the mega event, which will help the federation in finding fresh talent. We will soon announce the dates for the trials, in which U-20 players from across the country can participate,” he added.

He advised the players that those who wanted to appear in the trials should bring B forms, NICs and SSCC certificates so that confusion could be prevented. “We will select the team on merit so that it may perform exceptionally well in the Games and win laurels for the country,” Gen Sahi concluded.
KARACHI: Mohammad Asif claimed another victory as he outplayed Majid Ali 4-0 yesterday on day three of the 3rd Jubilee Insurance Ranking Snooker Championship in Karachi. The reigning world amateur champion, who was stretched by Babar Masih for a 4-3 victory in the last game, faced little resistance from Majid.
Khurram Agha also continued his winning streak, defeating Ayaz Khan 4-3 after a thrilling contest. Agha, who stunned top seed Imran Shahzad in the previous match, registered 84 and 86-point breaks during the win.
Jon Jones was forced to overcome his toughest ever test in the Octagon to retain his UFC light heavyweight title with an unanimous decision over Alexander Gustafsson in the main event at UFC 165 on Saturday night in Toronto.

After such a bruising war, both Jones and Gustafsson were taken to the hospital and weren't part of the post-fight press conference. So you wanna know how good of a fight that was, neither the champion or challenger will be here, UFC president Dana White said at the post-fight press conference. Jones is already at the hospital and we're taking Gustafsson there now.

You could tell in the final round they were fighting on pure heart. I believe this is one of those fights where both of the fighters believed they were going to die.

Team Jones told Ariel Helwani of Fox Sports that Jones injured his left foot badly early on in the fight.

The fight was awarded the Fight of the Night honors with both fighters awarded $50,000 bonuses.

White said that, while he would like to see a rematch, it's too soon to make a determination just yet
Today's mill is stroking its whiskered chin. Once upon a time, there existed a man by the name of Michael Finnegan, famed for his ability to germinate facial hair. And a magnificent example of facial hair it indeed was – you might say that it defined him – but for its deficiency in one crucial aspect, namely that of wind resistance. Perhaps this was only to be expected, as it is frequently gusty in San Francisco, where he lived, and particularly so in the Bay area, where he worked, outdoors, at a job that restarts the very second it ends, namely painting the Golden Gate Bridge. He jumped off.

Adnan Januzaj is yet to sign a new contract with Manchester United. This, apparently, constitutes a "stand-off", to which Manchester City have been "alerted" – along with the entire rest of the world, to whom this information is also freely available. But City are ready to "pounce", in a move that "should add extra spice to the season's first Manchester derby of the season". The two clubs have played each other 165 times, the first of those in 1891. Adnan Januzaj has played for United once, for 23 minutes.

Which isn't that much less time than Juan Mata has been permitted so far this season, the unwitting victim of José Mourinho's one-man quest to destroy football. This, too, has caught Manchester City's covetous eyes, and they plan to buy him in January. Until January, they plan not to buy him.

And another displaced diminutive playmaker may also be moving. After André Villas-Boas signed every man who plays in his position that he could possibly think of, Lewis Holtby has shown rare perspicacity in deducing that Spurs may no longer require his services. Though he is tempted to quit football to focus on the formal-wear retail business that takes his name, his plight has been observed by Internazionale, who are contemplating a January offer.

Elsewhere, and after thrilling us all summer with his desire to leave Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich, Robert Lewandowski is back in the news. His agent has spoken to Napoli's chairman, a fact he was eager to share via radio interview, confiding that: "I can tell you that we have recently had contact." But, a man of genuine mystery, intrigue, fascination and captivation, he refused to reveal every riveting detail. "I cannot tell you how long I spoke with Aurelio De Laurentiis. It must remain between us." Oh, them! Oh, how they tease us so, with all their remaining, and all their unspecified period of conversational time.

Back in England, Newcastle are interested in the purchase of Leeds's right-back Sam Byram, not to be confused with his adoptive brothers, Angel Rangel, Gerardo Torrado, Willie Crilley, Nortey Nortey and half-brother, Gakdeniz Karadeniz. Meanwhile, Leeds are contemplating recruiting Luke Dowling as head of recruitment. Dowling has placed more partners in the City than any other consultant of his type, and as such, his signature would represent a major triumph.

Finally, both Arsenal and Liverpool are keen on Schalke's Kyriakos Papadopoulos, but it is now unlikely that he will move to Anfield – though Premier League clubs spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on their own scouts, many also use intelligence gleaned by their rivals. Whenever Arsène Wenger pays heed to a centre-back, all interest in him is immediately abandoned, a fact that cannot have escaped the unfathomably wise Brendan Brendan, who has a friend who went to Harvard. However the move has quashed, once and for all, the notion posited by some that with Arsenal's purchase of the world's best player, unwanted by any of the world's several superior clubs, the transfer market had ended forever. Please do remember poor Michael at this difficult time.
